General FAQs

How much are your logs?

The cost of our seasoned hardwood firewood logs is £135 for a cubic metre, including VAT.

Should I buy hardwood or softwood firewood logs?

Anstee Firewood generally only offers hardwood firewood logs. Hardwood logs are the best you can buy. They are denser and therefore produce more energy and give off more heat than softwood logs. Hardwood logs will also give you the same heat using fewer logs and burn for longer, so overall you’ll burn fewer logs. We occasionally have softwood logs available on special request.

Should I buy seasoned or unseasoned firewood logs?

Anstee Firewood generally only offers seasoned firewood logs. Seasoned firewood logs are ready to burn. They have been cut and dried until the moisture content falls below 25% – a process which can take up to a year.

Unseasoned logs in comparison have been freshly cut and therefore have a high moisture content, typically around 50%. These logs will need to be dried in a ventilated, undercover space for 8-12 months before they can be used.

The moisture content is an important consideration because excessive moisture will mean more energy is needed to burn the wood. This will have a direct impact on the heat and therefore the efficiency of the log. A high moisture content also creates corrosive tar and smoke, which can damage stoves and flues, as well as increasing the risk of chimney fire and fumes.

A low moisture content will enable the log to burn hotter and more efficiently.

What does the moisture content mean?

The moisture content is a measure of how much water is in the log. Any log with a moisture content below 25% is classed as having a low moisture content and is therefore seasoned. At Anstee Firewood, we class any log with a moisture content above 25% as unseasoned, although unseasoned logs typically have a moisture content around 50%.

When firewood logs are freshly cut, they have a high moisture content. A high moisture content will mean more energy is needed to burn the wood, which will have a direct impact on the heat and therefore the efficiency of the log. A low moisture content will enable the log to burn hotter and more efficiently.

What is the moisture content of your firewood logs?

All Anstee seasoned firewood logs have a moisture content below 25%. You can be certain the logs will burn efficiently and effectively.

What wood species are your firewood logs?

Our hardwood firewood logs typically include a mix of native trees including sycamore logs, ash logs, oak logs, silver birch logs and beech logs. Our softwood firewood logs typically include a mix of larch logs, spruce logs, hemlock logs and douglas fir logs.

How big are the firewood logs you have for sale?

Although the log size varies, the average size of our logs is 9x4”, which makes them ideal for open fires, wood burners, multi-burners and chimineas.

Are your firewood logs suitable for a wood burner?

Yes. You can use our firewood logs in a wood burner.

Are your firewood logs suitable for a chiminea?

Yes. You can use our firewood logs in a chiminea.

Are your firewood logs suitable for a biofuel boiler?

Yes. Our standard size 9 inch/223mm logs are perfectly suited for a biofuel boiler.

Is VAT included in the cost of your firewood logs?

Yes. VAT is included in all our firewood log prices.

Do you sell your firewood logs by weight?

No. UK log suppliers are not permitted to sell logs or firewood by weight because they contain water. The more seasoned and ready to burn a log is, the lighter it becomes as the water evaporates. Buying logs by weight is a false economy because you’re buying the unwanted water in the log. For this reason, we sell our firewood logs by volume.

Where does your firewood come from?

Our wood comes from sustainable (Forestry Commission approved), local and uncontaminated sources. By using the likes of slab wood from sawmills and residual wood from tree work, we give waste wood an efficient and productive use.

How long have you been supplying firewood logs?

Anstee Firewood has been supplying firewood logs in Bridgend, Cowbridge, Pontyclun, Cardiff and surrounding areas across south Wales since 1985.

Bagged logs FAQs

How big is a cubic metre bag?

Our cubic metre (m3) dumpy bag is 90cm wide by 120cm high by 90cm long – like a larger version of the big sand bags you get from builders’ merchants. They are waist height for most people and of course, far too heavy to lift.

How many logs are in a bag?

We sell our firewood logs by volume and not by number. There is no set number of logs in each bag. The number of logs will vary due to slight differences in size and shape.

How many cubic metre bags will I need to see me through the winter?

Unlike the small bags that you often see at petrol stations and supermarkets, the cubic metre bags are very large so one bag may last a couple of months. This will depend on how often you light the fire and whether you are using it as your main source of heating, or alongside a separate heating system.

Do I have to return the bag once I’ve used all the logs?

No. Due to health and safety reasons we are not permitted to use the bags more than once. We encourage our customers to recycle the bags for garden waste, storage, DIY and so forth. We have even known customers to use the bags for composting, and to cut the bag up for use as a weed suppressant.

Can the bag be stored outside?

Yes, the bag can be stored outside. If the bag contains logs, make sure you cover the bag and the logs with a waterproof sheet, such as tarpaulin.

Log delivery FAQs

What are your delivery charges?

There is a minimum delivery charge of £5 within a 5 mile radius of CF35 5DL, or £1.50 per mile for a one-way trip from CF35 5DL for those outside the 5 mile radius. This is automatically calculated at checkout based on your postcode, or you can call us on 01656 646257 or email admin@ansteetreefelling.co.uk for a price.

How will my logs be delivered?

Our bagged firewood logs are delivered by tipper load using our Nissan Cabstar lorry. This small lorry is ideal for fitting into narrow residential driveways. The logs will be placed down at or as close as possible to your chosen point of delivery.

I don’t have a driveway. How will you deliver the logs?

If you don’t have a driveway, we will park on the main road at the closest possible point to your house. We will unload the logs onto the pavement and you will be responsible for moving them from this point.

Can I pick up the logs myself, to avoid a delivery charge?

Unfortunately we do not presently offer this service.

Access to my property is restricted. What should I do?

Please explain any access restrictions when you place your log order. We will be able to work with you to overcome any problems.

Do you deliver in the evenings or on the weekend?

Yes. All of our delivery appointments are in the evenings and over the weekend.

How quickly can you deliver my log order?

The average delivery takes around three days, although this can take up to a week during busy periods. If you call the office on 01656 646257 we will let you know how soon we can deliver.

If it’s raining, will my firewood logs get wet?

There is a possibility the logs may get wet during transit, however, because the logs dry from the inside out, this will not affect the moisture content or burning efficiency.

Can you deliver the firewood logs even if no one is home?

No. We will require someone to be available to receive the order. We do however offer delivery appointments six days a week for your convenience.

Seasoned logs FAQs

Why should I buy seasoned firewood logs?

Seasoned firewood logs are ready to burn. They have been cut and dried until the moisture content falls below 25% – a process which can take up to a year.

The moisture content is important because excessive moisture will mean more energy is needed to burn the wood.

We recommend you only burn seasoned logs.

What is the moisture content of your seasoned firewood logs?

Our seasoned firewood logs have a moisture content below 25%.

How should I store seasoned firewood logs?

Seasoned firewood logs should be stored in a dry place, such as in a log store, garden shed or garage. They can also be stored under a cover such as tarpaulin.

What happens if my seasoned firewood logs get wet?

If your logs are temporarily rained on, the rain will not affect the moisture content or burning efficiency. Seasoned logs should not however be exposed to rain for prolonged periods because this will reduce the burning efficiency and therefore heat produced.
